Background of the Study

Automation has become a cornerstone of modern financial management, offering tools and systems that streamline operations, enhance accuracy, and reduce manual errors. In government financial management, automation is crucial for improving efficiency, transparency, and accountability (PwC, 2024). The Federal Ministry of Works and Housing in Nigeria has embraced automation initiatives to address inefficiencies in financial reporting, budget allocation, and expenditure tracking.

Despite these advancements, challenges such as technical skill gaps, resistance to change, and infrastructure deficits have impeded the full potential of automation. This study examines the impact of automation on government financial management in Nigeria, focusing on the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing.

Statement of the Problem

Inefficiencies in financial management have long plagued Nigerian government institutions, leading to resource mismanagement, delayed project execution, and lack of accountability. Automation offers a solution to these issues, yet its adoption remains inconsistent across various ministries, including the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing. Challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, lack of skilled personnel, and resistance to change have limited the effectiveness of automation initiatives (Olowe & Bamidele, 2023).

This study evaluates the impact of automation on government financial management in Nigeria, highlighting successes, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.

  2. To evaluate the impact of automation on efficiency, transparency, and accountability in government financial management.
  3. To identify challenges and propose strategies for improving automation in government financial management.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of automation in financial management within the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing?
  2. How has automation impacted efficiency, transparency, and accountability in government financial management?
  3. What challenges hinder the effective implementation of automation in government financial management?
